MELVIN ANDERSON | MURANO VAAS, 2023

Murano vase, 2023
Hand blown glass, made in Murano, Italy
Unique vase designed by Melvin Anderson, specially made for WonderWood

Melvin Anderson (Aruba, 1944) worked for fashion houses around the globe from his Milan-based studio for fabric design, before working with glass. His sense of colour and texture as well as his ability to capture the zeitgeist enticed customers from the U.S. to Japan. Just over ten years ago, Anderson felt the need to take his career in a new direction. Following a suggestion from a friend, he visited Murano and was fascinated by the glass here.

The material has been a revelation to him. More than ever, Anderson’s designs exude his personality. Northern European clarity meets Italian warmth, traces of Africa mix with a longing for the Caribbean. Strong, rich colours and graphic lines appeal to -again- an international crowd of collectors, galleries, museums and design stores worldwide.

Specially for WonderWood, Anderson designed this unique vase with a playful design in thick clear glass with a beautiful opalescent shine.

This vase designed by Anderson was executed by master glassblower Andrea Zilio (Venice, 1966) at Vetreria Anfora in Murano.

Zilio's great passion for the material glass ensured that he obtained the title 'Primo Maestro' in the Anfora glass factory in a short time. He makes his own glass works of art in which he applies complex traditional glass techniques and great contemporary artists and designers such as Melvin Anderson also entrust him with the realization of their prestigious glass works. Zilio also taught at Seattle's important Pilchuck Glass School and actively collaborated with the Abate Zanetti Glass School in Murano.
